Blueprints For Small Offices

the ends of Celtiberia: Calatayud and forgotten region. Reflections

"If you go to Calatayud ..."
Coming from Barcelona, I have always believed to be coming home once you can see Calatayud and land. This framework, as similar to those that may occur in the south of Burgos, in northern Guadalajara, Teruel, is a gateway to the wilds plateau obviously serving, in no small measure of landscape transition . The Aragonese fruit mixed with oaks and karst formations, typically by fusing with the most proper Aragon Celtiberian. This region, administratively Aragon, is among the least known of our country.
His wonders, both natural and architectural, place him among the richest in Spain as far as history and landmarks referred. Baltasar Gracian born here and Martial, the famous Roman writer, which is why we can say that this area is "the birthplace of wise men", while natural wonder. Ignoring the whimsical and prioritizing the order, starting with its capital, the city of Calatayud.
The " very noble, loyal, always August and most faithful city of Calatayud " is the largest city entity that can be found from Zaragoza to Guadalajara. His only thirty thousand people made him to be worthy of a station AVE, infrastructure seems to be giving a new push to development. Great place for food shopping, Calatayud has its own wine appellation of origin, while an extraordinary offer local products (most notably, for my taste, the rich fruits of the region, sausage and chocolate, which then we'll talk).
As you know many of the schools across Spain, the adjective of Calatayud is "Calatayud", this due to the ancient Roman city of Bílbilis, the birthplace of Martial. Located on a hill near the present city, in the municipality of Huérmeda of Bílbilis ruins have survived as attractive and suggestive (theater, baths, Nymphaeum forum ...), all in strict correlation with the importance of place. In the current Calatayud, where more than recommended, Museum, we look at some of the findings at the site (focusing on collections of paintings, the collection of the mint numinástica place and sculpture trails, highlighting the Augustus " velata capita).
With the Muslim conquest, Calatayud experienced a period of great splendor (even led his own Taifa, from 1046 to 1055). Reconquered by Alfonso I the Battler, the city would maintain a geo-strategic position first order, the second city in population, all Aragon. Of these times highlights the castle (known as "Plaza de Armas" by locals), fortification of the city its name. This, while still in ruins, the most emblematic of the fortifications Calatayud, but should also highlight other, as the beautiful Puerta de terre (dating from the second half of XVI century).
Along with its defensive structures, among its monuments include the beautiful collegiate church of Santa Maria (National Monument since 1884 and a World Heritage Site since 2001), built on the old mosque of "Kalat Ayub." Nothing close to it we see one of its greatest assets: its cover. Plateresco a splendid, with tejaroz, and conceived as an altarpiece, its construction is due to Juan Esteban Talavera and Obray. Along with this, or rather, above it, stands the greatest charm of the building, its Mudejar tower of 68 meters. Indeed, experts say we are facing the most perfect primitive Renaissance Mudejar construction, the main argument for the church to receive the "reward" of being a World Heritage Site.
This beautiful Mudejar tower guard only comparison with those of San Andres, also in city itself. Besides these two temples include the Collegiate Church of Holy Sepulcher (headquarters of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Spain and that is a replica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem), Church of San Pedro de los Francos (of which stands the splendid Levantine gothic cover), the shrine of the Virgen de la Peña and the church of San Juan el Real (within which are kept fresh by Goya in the scallops of the chapter, which is very kindly taught by the pastor of temple). Among the civil buildings, next to a beautiful Plaza Mayor (with the old building of the Town Council stand out above any other), highlights the Meson de la Dolores (beautiful Renaissance building has served as the palace and guest over the centuries) and the Palace of Baron Warsage (post-casino). Leaving
Calatayud, between the towns of their region Ateca would highlight the historic capital of the English chocolate (there is produced the famous "Bones"), Cetina (dominated by the imposing palace-castle, on whose beautiful Elizabethan chapel Quevedo married) and Alhama de Aragón (true wonder of nature, with several of the most famous Hispanic spas, highlighting the thermal lake.) Dam About Tranquera, not far from these places, is the picturesque village of Nuévalos. It contains the remains of a castle belonging to the Order of the Holy Sepulchre (which, remember, had his "English headquarters" in Calatayud), and various churches and other sites of interest, although that is the second most visited of Aragon is due to the fact of being near the site of the beautiful Monasterio de Piedra.
Alfonso II, King of Aragon, gave the Catalans monks from Poblet this "slice of heaven" in order to undertake a foundation there Cistercian. Thirteen monks, headed by Rocabertí waffles, Tarragona left the temple, starting work on the new monastery in 1195, and ending in 1218 (date of consecration). The place was occupied ado by the monks until 1835, in revolutionary times, were ejected from the premises. Currently the site is private property, keeping the building in a dilapidated monastery. While the building does not have anything to do with the beautiful monastery of Santa María de Huerta or Veruela, it is true that the extraordinary beauty of the place is not strictly due to human ...
The orchard on which the monastery is a beautiful valley made by the gradual action of the river Piedra. Its waterfalls, caves, pools and populations, both animal and vegetable make him a place closer to the Divine to the ground. In full contrast to the aridity of the region, there is a place where trees seem to want to touch the sky, and water carved (on occasion with the help of man) accidents that are worthy of contemplation, idyllic funds for relaxation and reflection. Historically, the monastery is important in two respects: it was the first place where he built a farm in Spain (currently in operation), and the first place where chocolate was developed in Europe (the beginning of a tradition which continues to chocolate this region as a splendid bastion). Among its jewels landscape, otherwise very abundant, stresses the cascade Horsetail (with a jump of over 50 meters) and Lake Mirror. Also present are exhibitions of falconry, highlighting the wide range of species that are listed.
Next to the Monasterio de Piedra, are particularly interesting sports options and archaeological excursions offered by the area. Among the latter include the site of Segeda (between Mara and Belmonte de Gracian), under the leadership of the highest authority in culture and civilization Celtiberian, Professor Mozota Burillo, is becoming a "center of pilgrimage for all those who want to know more about Roman peoples Peninsula.
